This project was all about the angles. We twisted this space 45 degrees to compliment the creative angles existing in the architecture of the home. By doing this we created a contemporary outdoor space to hang out and enjoy. The existing deck was decaying, and it needed to be replaced. This space is now all about outdoor living with couches to relax in, a cozy fire to warm up to, a spa area complete with a hot tub, and some strategic planting to add interest.
The major challenge to this space is that the home in on a hill. We created two spaces. One upper area with access to the main floor off the kitchen for BBQing. The lower level is where we carved out the outdoor living area and spa space. Near the patio doors is the hot tub for quick access to the house on chilly nights. Once you make the turn around the corner of house there is a courtyard area with a large couch, comfortable chairs, and a fire wrapped around by a large retaining wall.
As mentioned, one of our greatest challenges for this space is working with the existing grades. In many areas we added steps to maneuver through the space. Lower to gain head room under the house overhang and higher to reduce the amount of timber steps to the top. We were always playing with steps and the amount of space we had to maximize sq ft of practical living space.
